Insemination

Safe and Gentle Insemination Methods

Endoscopic Transcervical Insemination:

This is an intrauterine insemination since the semen is deposited in the uterus of the bitch. After the endoscopic examination has been carried out, the semen is introduced into the uterus of the bitch: while an assistant (usually the owner) holds the bitch on the table, an endoscope is guided through the vagina until the external cervix becomes visible. Then, a catheter is guided through the cervix and the semen is deposited. This technique is suitable for all kinds of semen (fresh, chilled, frozen), significantly more successful (15% higher pregnancy rates), as compared to deep vaginal insemination

Surgical (intrauterine) Insemination:

This is an intrauterine insemination since the semen is deposited in the uterus of the bitch. With surgical insemination the bitch must be placed under a short general anesthesia. Then the semen is injected directly into the uterine horns after an abdominal section (about 5-8 cm in length). According to the experience of most semen banks, surgical insemination is more successful than transcervical insemination. However, it is also more invasive and is therefore used only under special indications.

Deep vaginal insemination:

This is not an intrauterine insemination, since the semen is deposited in front of the uterus of the bitch, namely deep in the vagina. Fresh or chilled semen can also be used for deep vaginal insemination. This technique is much easier than the transcervical endoscopic method. But the chance of pregnancy is also poor, at least 15% lower than in the case of intrauterine insemination. Because of the worse results, we carry out the deep vaginal insemination only in exceptional cases.
